Hi, I’m Stu and I am the Managing Director of Greener Edge Ltd.
Greener Edge was set up by me in 2018 to provide energy and sustainability solutions within the public sector and corporate environment.
My passion for sustainability and environmental protection was formed at an early age through hillwalking, mountaineering and rock climbing and this was fully cemented when I spent time working as an emergency response logistician on humanitarian response programs throughout Africa, Eastern Europe and in Pakistan.
The years I spent working as a humanitarian aid worker provided me with the opportunity to witness the effects of climate change first hand and the human suffering, misery and conflict that are directly attributed to it.
My wife and I returned to the UK in late 2006 to start a family and I entered the corporate environment in 2007 full of determination to ensure that any commercial activity I was involved in would be responsible for its own actions and its own footprint.
When I started working in commercial shopping centres, I was resolute that I would do as much as possible to reduce and mitigate the impact of the corporate asset on the environment and would take the concept of corporate responsibility seriously; not just as lip service or tick the box concepts.
I spent the next 10 years working within the corporate environment and in my first post I was integral in enhancing sustainability of the corporate asset and in dramatically increasing the levels of environmental management and protection within the site. I was able to fully embed sustainability into all aspects of the sites operations and through careful negotiation and trust building with the asset management team I was able to change their perception of environmental responsibility.
My next corporate role was as the energy manager responsible for a portfolio of 50 retail and leisure assets across the UK. My role involved keeping the entire portfolio abreast of current legislation as well as implementation of the ISO:50001 management system across all sites. This focussed on the education and training of all asset stakeholders on the importance of sustainability and energy management to allow a complete culture change to one that recognises the impact of its actions and the potential to improve in all aspects of its operations.
After 10 years working within the corporate sector I moved into the NHS, a proud moment for me.
Part of my NHS role included strategic responsibility for waste management for the Trust, ensuring compliance with legislation and internal NHS Healthcare Technical Memoranda. I also maximised available opportunities, through the waste hierarchy, to reuse materials and improve recycling to recover financial benefit and offset waste management costs.
My other hat, within the NHS, concentrated on the monitoring and interpretation of energy use and implementation of projects to reduce energy consumption. This remains an ongoing aspect of some of my exisiting consultancy portfolio.
In 2018 my crazy family and I made the brave decision to up sticks from Kent and move to the beautiful Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. We made this radical decision because we wanted our children to grow up surrounded by nature and to learn, as youngsters, the importance of protecting and preserving our environment.
And that is where the dream of Greener Edge was finally realised. So far we are exceeding our expectations and I feel genuinely excited at the potential for supporting more sustainable organisations across the UK.
