Product Carbon Footprinting

We calculate the carbon footprint of your food and drink products, showing you exactly where emissions occur across the full lifecycle, from ingredients through to packaging, transport and end-of-life.

Stockroom of packaged products assessed for product-level carbon footprints

Having completed the development of a tool to carbon footprint food and drink, we are able to build bespoke product carbon footprinting methodology and tools relevant to a variety of products.

For food and drink, our assessments follow the WRAP LED4Food methodology and ISO 14067:2018, offering credible, decision-useful results you can use for internal reduction planning, retailer sustainability reporting and supply chain engagement, with a clear pathway to independent verification.

Product carbon footprinting (PCF) is the process of calculating the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a specific product across all, or part of its life cycle - this includes from raw material extraction and manufacturing, through to distribution and use, continuing to end-of-life disposal or recycling. You may sometimes hear this referred to as cradle-to-grave.

Emissions are expressed as a CO2 equivalent (CO2e) figure and are typically calculated in line with standards such as ISO 14067 or the GHG Protocol Product Standard.

The goal is to give manufacturers, buyers and consumers a quantified and comparable measure of a product’s climate impact, which can be used to identify hotspots in the supply chain, inform procurement decisions, support environmental product declarations, or underpin claims about low-carbon or net-zero products.

This ultimately promotes transparency and accountability, building trust with consumers, other businesses and within the industry.

We aim to demystify a lot of the common misconceptions around carbon emissions - and part of this relies on producing easy-to-understand, straightforward reports, which make sense of sometimes complex data.

Our report will give you a cradle-to-grave overall emission figure, and then will break this down into Lifecycle Stages, which include Primary Production, Packaging, Supply Chain and Use Stage, which incorporates the disposal of the packaging (for example), and all of this can be tailored to your specific product and industry. Please also be assured that our team are around to talk through all elements of our reports and clarify any calculations or report outcomes.

Absolutely. Product carbon footprinting is not a quick process, and can be an investment, both financially and time-wise. We would actively encourage talking to us first, about how this can be helpful for your organisation or business, before engaging in any specific work.

Greener Edge take this approach with all the services we provide, so that we know we are offering you the best service, and that it is a service you can genuinely benefit from.
